Organisation serves up some love
Serve to Grow Foundation hosts Valentine's feeding project and hands out stationary packs to children.
The Serve to Grow Foundation continued its mission of making a difference in the community by hosting a Valentine’s Day feeding project in one of Fleurhof’s flats on February 13.
The community members were served bread and soup supplied by Shoprite, and about 200 learners received stationary packs to help with school later that day. Founders of the organisation Gavin and Melissa Huber said they strongly believe everyone needs to be shown love and compassion, regardless of their background or circumstances.

“Our Fleurhof feeding project has been running for about two years now, and the need here is big. We run a soup kitchen daily where three ladies who are volunteering cook and serve children before they can go to school. We try to include community members in every project to ensure that they are contributing to their growth and development,” Gavin said.
Having started only in 2019, the organisation has made a big difference in helping communities such as the Vaal, Newclare, Benoni, Coronation, and Westbury, not only feeding but also assisting Early Childhood Development Centres with what they need, supplying nappies to mothers, and supporting victims affected by gender-based violence.

In addition to providing essential services, the foundation also focuses on empowering community members to become self-sufficient.
“We try to feed where we can, but where there’s an opportunity to grow, do more, and involve the community, we get involved – that’s the aim of our organisation.”
By providing training and resources, the organisation helps individuals acquire the skills they need to start their own businesses, breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering a sense of community pride.
