Panorama team patches potholes
More tar is on the way, and the PRA promises they’ll be back on the roads soon.
Weltevreden Park — Frustrated by ongoing inaction from city authorities, the Panorama Residents Association rolled up their sleeves and tackled a major pothole patching project on April 12.
Led by the dynamic Panorama@Work team – humorously dubbed the Panorama Pothole Patrol for the day, the group managed to patch dozens of hazardous potholes across the neighbourhood using a staggering four tons of tar.

Deputy chairperson of the association, Michael Steyn, said the group initially attempted to count the number of potholes but gave up due to the sheer number.

“To give you an idea of how extensive the damage was, we used 160 bags of tar, each weighing 25kg,” he said.
Despite running out of material before they could reach every road, the team prioritised the worst-affected and most dangerous areas, ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike.
The initiative comes after four weeks of unanswered pleas to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
“We’ve logged multiple calls about the deteriorating road conditions. Sadly, no action was taken. Whether it’s a lack of care or funding, we can’t say. But what we can say is that the Panorama Residents Association cares deeply,” Michael emphasised.

While the association awaits another delivery of tar to complete the remaining work, residents are being encouraged to support community-led efforts like this by becoming members. An annual contribution of just R250 goes a long way toward making tangible improvements in the area.

Michael also expressed gratitude to Sasol Allens Nek (on the corner of Jim Fouchè Road and Landhuis Street) for lending a trailer to transport the tar and Full Spectrum Hire at Hillfox Value Centre for sponsoring a plate compactor used during the repairs.
“We’ll be back to finish the job as soon as possible,” Michael assured. “And we’ll keep our community updated on the next round of road repairs.”
