The driver, alleged to be a Member of Parliament, was arrested.

Three young people lost their lives when a BMW collided with the e-hailing cab they were travelling in at the corner of 9th Avenue and Goldman Street, Florida, in the early hours of Thursday, July 10.

According to multiple sources the Roodepoort Record spoke to, the three were in the cab on their way home after a night out when a white BMW allegedly skipped a red traffic light at high speed and crashed into them.

Florida CPF chairperson Farhaad Sardiwalla confirmed the accident and said the three young people were declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the white BMW allegedly caused the collision.

Several reports also suggest the BMW driver is a Member of Parliament for a prominent political party.

The Record approached JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, who confirmed that officers attended the scene. He added that the investigation was handed over to the Krugersdorp Local Criminal Record Centre’s forensic unit.

Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that the driver was arrested.

Photos were taken on the scene by community members.

“A case of culpable homicide was opened, and the suspect will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court today [July 11].”

Sibeko also confirmed that one person is receiving medical treatment in the hospital, but declined to comment further.

A statement from Help24 EMS confirmed the three fatalities and added that another patient with moderate injuries was taken to hospital for further treatment. No further details about the driver’s condition are currently available.

Bystanders, who asked to remain anonymous, alleged that the BMW driver appeared to be intoxicated. The Record has requested official confirmation from the relevant authorities.
