Young actress stars in Matilda Musical

Her selection serves as proof of her determination and commitment. Her story is proof that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.

Phatsimo Msomi, an 11-year-old Grade Five learner at Crawford International Ruimsig, has landed a role in the stage production of Matilda the Musical Jr. currently on show at the People’s Theatre in Braamfontein until July 27.

The show, based on Roald Dahl’s classic book, features Phatsimo as one of the schoolchildren in the ensemble cast.

Phatsimo shares that when she found out she had been selected, she felt a mix of emotions.

“I felt happy, excited, and nervous all at the same time. I was worried about how it would affect my schoolwork and all the extracurriculars I do,” she said. Phatsimo is a busy student, playing piano, tennis, golf, and chess, and recently started learning the clarinet. She also participates in dance and public speaking.

To balance her schedule, Phatsimo has had to pause some of her regular activities. Rehearsals usually take place after school, and she uses evenings and car rides to do homework and revise. Her love for performing started early, and she began singing in Grade R and discovered a passion for acting in Grade three.

“My mom inspires me. She’s always encouraged me to try new things,” she said.

Phatsimo’s parents were proud and surprised when she was selected from over 200 children who auditioned.

“When we heard her name called out, we were over the moon. It was unexpected,” her mother, Katlego, said. The experience has already brought about growth, with Phatsimo’s family noting a significant increase in her confidence.

“She used to be extremely shy, even freezing on stage during a ballet recital. Now, it’s incredible to watch her perform confidently in front of an audience,” her mother said.

Phatsimo hopes to encourage other young people to try out for stage roles.

“Push yourself and do your best. With hard work and commitment, anything is possible,” she said.
