Horizon Shopping Centre announces their Nelson Mandela Day initiative

The centre calls on donations for elderly care families and has a soup kitchen initiative.

In honour of Nelson Mandela Day (July 18), Horizon Shopping Centre is calling on the community to join hands through tangible acts of kindness.

This year, the centre has partnered with Wings of Inspiration and Nosh Food Rescue, two impactful organisations to support vulnerable elderly individuals and their families.

Under the banner ‘Keeping the Spirit of Madiba on the Horizon’, the shopping centre has been running a major collection drive which started on June 17 and will be running until July 16, and donations of non-perishable items are being accepted at designated points within the centre.

According to a statement sent to the Roodepoort Record by Horizon’s marketing manager, Unathi Tyali, the primary beneficiary of the collected food parcels will be the families connected to the frail care centres supported by Wings of Inspiration.

“These families often face significant challenges, and the donations will provide essential support and comfort, directly embodying Mandela’s call to alleviate poverty and care for the elderly and vulnerable,” the statement reads.

Adding warmth to the day, Nosh Food Rescue will generously provide soup for distribution. This collaboration ensures that nutritious sustenance is part of the Mandela Day outreach efforts alongside the donated food parcels, clothing, and toys.

Join in on the day (July 18)

The culmination of the drive will be on Mandela Day itself, Friday, July 18, at Horizon Shopping Centre. The community is invited to join the team as they sort donations, pack food parcels destined for Wings of Inspiration families, and help distribute soup provided by Nosh Food Rescue.

How to contribute

Drop off non-perishable food items (tinned goods, pasta, rice, maize meal, oil, long-life milk, etc.) at the collection points at Horizon Shopping Centre (Checkers court).

Be involved

Volunteer by lending your hands for 67 minutes (or more!) on the day to help pack and sort donations. You can also spread the word by encouraging friends, family, and colleagues to donate.
