Gauteng water police recover body in Honeydew
Authorities urge the public to exercise caution around open water sources, especially in rivers and dams.
Divers from the Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services recovered the body of a man believed to have drowned in a stream in Honeydew on Saturday, June 13.
According to Johannesburg Flying Squad spokesperson Raymond Sambo, diving teams were dispatched to the corner of Baleta and Inry Avenue in Boskruin Gardens following reports of a possible drowning around 14:40.
“On arrival, officers recovered the body of a man, estimated to be 30 years old, from a nearby stream. Authorities reported that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition,” said Sambo.
The remains were retrieved by the diving unit and handed over to members of the Honeydew police on the scene. Police have since opened an inquest docket to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Sambo urges the public to exercise caution around open water sources, especially rivers and dams, emphasising that unnecessary loss of life can be prevented through basic safety measures.
“Individuals venturing into dams, rivers, or any open water for recreational or other activities are advised to wear life jackets where possible. Parents are also encouraged to educate children about the dangers of open water and ensure constant supervision,” he added.
Members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or have relevant information are encouraged to contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
