Serving for a good cause
A West Rand foundation partnered with Cupcakes of Hope and Panarottis Clearwater to raise funds and awareness for children battling cancer while encouraging residents to support National Cupcake Day in September.
The Everyday Kindness Charity Foundation teamed up with Cupcakes of Hope at Panarottis Clearwater to raise funds and awareness for children living with cancer.
Volunteers from the foundation assisted as waiters during the evening of July 29, with Panarottis donating 10% of the night’s turnover to Cupcakes of Hope. The initiative highlighted the importance of community partnerships in supporting children and families affected by cancer.
According to the founder of Everyday Kindness, Sanay Ramsammy, the foundation’s involvement stems from a lifelong passion for community service.
“My inspiration came from my time in law school, where I was involved in community outreach. When I stepped away to focus on my studies, I realised something was missing, and that inspired me to start Everyday Kindness so I could continue giving back to the community,” he said.
The cause is particularly meaningful to Sanay because cancer has affected people close to her.
“I have family members living with cancer, and I’ve also lost people I know to the disease. That is why initiatives like this mean so much to me. We don’t only work with Cupcakes of Hope, but support many different community projects throughout the year,” she said.
She said organisations such as Everyday Kindness help connect members of the public with trusted charities.
“Many people want to help but don’t know where to start. We act as a bridge between people who want to make a difference and organisations that genuinely need assistance. It also gives people confidence that they are supporting legitimate causes,” she added.
The fundraising evening also served to promote National Cupcake Day, which will be held on September 26. Volunteers from Cupcakes of Hope will sell cupcakes at more than 80 shopping malls across South Africa, including Clearwater Mall, with proceeds going towards supporting children with cancer.
“The importance of these initiatives is, first and foremost, to create awareness. There are many ways the public can get involved besides donating money,” said a representative from Cupcakes of Hope, Jacqueline Govender.
Jacqueline encouraged residents to support the campaign by purchasing a cupcake on National Cupcake Day.
“Even one cupcake can make a world of difference to a child living with cancer. We encourage everyone to spread the word and support this worthy cause,” she added.
