106 years of memories and milestones
The former educator was surrounded by those closest to her as she marked an incredible chapter in her life.
Former long-time teacher and Florida Park resident Cora Zietsman celebrated an extraordinary milestone on September 6 when she turned 106 years old, surrounded by loved ones during an intimate tea party at Belenois Totalcare in Krugersdorp.
Born in 1920 in Frankfort, Free State, Cora grew up on a farm in Bothaville as the second oldest of five siblings. After completing her schooling in Bothaville, she earned her degree from the University of the Free State and embarked on a long, fulfilling career in education. Her passion for languages became a defining aspect of her life, leading her to teach English and German for many years, including a notable period at Hoërskool Florida from 1969 until her retirement in 1977. According to her daughter, Estelle Harris, that love for language never faded, as Cora remains an avid reader who still keeps a book close at hand today.
Family and community have always been at the centre of Cora’s life. She married Lukas “Ziets” Zietsman in February 1946, and together they raised three children: Johan and André, who now live overseas, and Estelle, who resides near the Krugersdorp facility.
Today, she is also a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren and great-grandmother to nine. Beyond her teaching, Cora was known throughout Florida Park for her active lifestyle, playing tennis twice a week after retiring and tending to her garden. Deeply committed to her faith, she also led a local Bible study group for many years, fostering friendships that have endured for decades.
Following her husband’s passing in 1996, Cora lived at Waterval Village for several years before moving to Belenois at the age of 98. Over the past eight years, she has become a cherished resident whose warmth, humility, and lifelong lessons on love and respect continue to inspire both staff and fellow residents.
While her 105th birthday was celebrated with a large gathering of family and friends, this year’s 106th milestone was spent peacefully with her local family, honouring a full century and more of teaching, faith, and lasting memories.
