Learners make a difference on Spring Day
Laerskool Die Ruiter celebrated Spring Day with a generous donation to The Sweethearts Foundation.
Laerskool Die Ruiter Primary welcomed and celebrated Spring Day, and the highlight of the day was the donation handover of bottle caps to the Sweethearts Foundation, marking the end of an amazing four-month-long community project carried out by the learners.
This project was a collaborative effort from the learners who meticulously gathered bottle caps to support a worthy cause and make a difference to those in need.
These bottle caps were recycled and generated a financial contribution, which was used by The Sweethearts Foundation to purchase wheelchairs for individuals in need.

According to the organiser of this project, Marissa Maas, the crucial part of this initiative was the sorting process, which ensured that the donated bottle caps were in optimal condition for recycling.
“A dedicated group called ‘So Love Krugersdorp’ was responsible for sorting the caps collected from the school, categorising them by colour, size and other attributes, and removing any undesirable or non-recyclable objects.
“This process ensured that the caps were ready for recycling and that the funds generated would have the maximum impact. Each time the collected bottle caps reached 500gr [about 200 caps], Jessica Gordon, the founding member of the foundation, arranged for a courier to collect the donation.

“This initiative underscores the importance of recycling and highlights how community efforts can contribute significantly to supporting less fortunate individuals,” Marissa shared.
She says on this day learners and the teachers were dressed in floral outfits and it was a festive way of bringing everyone together – the learners, teachers and community – and they celebrated the success of this project.
