Florries principal launches innovative wellness initiative
Teachers track their daily steps and submit them to the principal for mental health awareness and a great prize.
The principal of Laerskool Florida, Rickus Swanepoel, has challenged his teachers to a “track your steps” initiative aimed at raising awareness and improving mental health among teachers.
The idea is that at the end of each day, teachers need to submit their total number of steps for the day, and at the end of the challenge, the top three will receive great prizes.
This challenge started on October 1 and will end on December 6 when schools close, and currently, 31 out of 44 teachers are in the run for the big prize.
“Teachers play an important role in society, and they must become aware of their mental health. Inspiringly, some teachers have been taking a walk around the school during their free periods, and the learners have been enthusiastic about it.
“We also have received great sponsorships from different organisations and the top three teachers will be awarded at the end of the term,” he adds.
“You feel better about yourself by these small challenges. It’s a small challenge, but it makes such a big difference to those who are participating in it. It’s a feel-good thing,” he says.
Additionally, on October 31, staff showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink. This heartfelt gesture demonstrated the school’s dedication to promoting health awareness and solidarity with those affected by breast cancer.
“We’re grateful for the support and look forward to celebrating our winners at the end of term,” Rickus concludes.
