Lantern welcomes new principal
With over 36 years in special needs education, new principal Alta Kotze is happy to join the family.
Lantern School has appointed a new principal with over 36 years of experience in special needs education and she wants to continue fostering a culture of inclusivity, diversity, respect and care in the school.
Alta Kotze was officially appointed as Lantern’s new head at the beginning of October. As she settled into her new role, she shared her inspiring journey with the Roodepoort Record.
She said growing up her mother was a secretary in different schools and she was drawn into this profession.
“I think the profession chose me,” she said with a warm smile.
“Growing up, I used to teach my doll and I’ve always had a nurturing and loving spirit. I would get along with everyone,” she added.
Her passion for education led her to pursue a diploma at the University of Pretoria, where she majored in Further Education and Training with business, economics, and typing as part of her subjects.
Her first job was as a typing teacher, a role that sparked her dedication to empowering learners with unique needs.
“I’ve always been driven to make a difference in the lives of my students,” Kotze said.
As she embarks on her new chapter at Lantern School, Alta is committed to building on the school’s legacy of inclusivity and care.
“Going into the new year, I’m hoping to continue fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity,” she emphasised.
“We want to create a supportive environment, especially since this is a special school. We’ll focus on building a culture of care, respect, empathy, and sympathy.”
