Roodies project spreads love and kindness throughout the community
Local schools initiative raises R22 000 for Cupcakes of Hope and earns a prestigious award.
The Hoërskool Roodepoort council has been (throughout the year) embarking on a project called Amore that aims to give back to the community and inspire a culture of compassion among learners.
From visiting old age homes to volunteering in dog shelters, the Amore team has been working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.
One of the project’s most notable achievements is its collaboration with Cupcakes of Hope, an organisation that bakes and sells cupcakes to help children who are battling cancer.
According to Sanay Ramsammy, president of Amore and head boy of Roodepoort, this year their team baked and sold an impressive 2006 cupcakes and raised about R22k for this organisation. Their efforts were recognised with a prestigious award for the best fundraising campaign in South Africa for the Mandela Day initiative, presented by the Youth Citizens Action Programme.

“This project and win hold a deep significance to our school, and everyone is always looking forward to knowing how they can help with our next project. It also signifies the school’s commitment and teamwork. It shows that it’s not only about academics but being a good person.
“We get inspired by every person we help and every single home that we visit. It makes us want to give back so much more and go bigger after every project.
“We also want to encourage our learners to start at an early age to realise that it’s not hard or expensive to give back to the community in need,” shared Sanay.
“We are grateful for every person that participated in this project, especially Helana Terblanche, Marina van der Merwe and Mrs Schmid who supported us throughout the entire process,” he concludes.
