Lantern hosts successful canned food drive

The school collected over 1 000 cans to support the school's feeding scheme, and was shared with Round Table Florida.

Lantern School organised another heartfelt canned food drive, marking another year of giving back to the community.

This initiative, which began in 2018, aims to collect canned food to support the school’s feeding scheme and was also shared with Round Table Florida, a charity organisation that distributes food to those in need.

According to Joanna Rossouw, the speech-language, feeding scheme and welfare co-ordinator, this year’s drive was a huge success, with 1 312 cans collected, surpassing last year’s total of 953 cans.

“Learners were also incentivised to participate by being allowed to wear casual clothes to school, and the grade four class emerged as the top collectors, with Jayden-Lee Evans contributing an impressive 174 cans to push his class to the top.

“The event was made more engaging this year with the creation of a large smiley face in the school hall,” she said.

Joanne Rossouw said that through this initiative, the school aims to instil valuable lessons in its learners, including the importance of sharing, teamwork, collaboration, and community spirit.

She adds that by participating in the canned food drive, learners develop a sense of social responsibility and understand the impact of their actions on the community.
