Scholar patrollers keep Discovery Primary learners safe

Thirty six learners take charge of road safety at Discovery Primary School.

Discovery Primary School has taken a proactive step in ensuring the safety of its learners by launching its Scholar Patrol programme.

The programme, which was officially launched on May 22, has 36 trained and registered learner patrollers, aged 11 to 12, working in teams to guide their peers across roads and regulate traffic.

According to Charlton Ward, the Scholar Patrol co-ordinator and teacher at the school, the programme began with training and registration in December, where the learners acquired their uniforms and equipment. He adds that further training was conducted this year, equipping the learners with the necessary skills to carry out their responsibilities.

“The trained scholar patrollers play a vital role in guiding their peers across roads, help to regulate traffic and prevent accidents. Additionally, this programme educated young pedestrians about the importance of road safety.

“The programme not only provides a responsible public service but also develops leadership skills, teamwork, and responsibility in the learners,” Charlton said.

Charlton adds that the school has also partnered with transport operators, parents, and community members at large to ensure their learners’ safety.
