Crawfordians celebrate Mandela Day with kindness
When kindness takes over, unexpected things begin to happen.
On Friday, August 1, learners at Crawford International Ruimsig Preparatory celebrated Mandela Day through a sandwich donation campaign. This initiative aimed to support families and those in need by collecting food and preparing meals for them.
According to the school’s marketing officer, Megan Birch, they initially planned to make 800 sandwiches, but to their surprise, they ended up making 1 421.

“Thanks to the incredible generosity of our families and the unwavering support of our staff, we collected a staggering 583 loaves of bread for The Cradle of Hope; 134 of these loaves were donated by Milan Dasrath and his brother Malachi. We are so grateful to all our families,” Megan said. She adds that the bread will be frozen and donated to families in need, extending their care beyond their school gates.

The learners packed the sandwiches with love and included handwritten messages on them for the recipients. The learners faced a small challenge while they made sandwiches as they ran out of sandwich bags, but that didn’t stop them from achieving their goal of making a difference in people’s lives. They instead borrowed some of the bags from their catering department.

“The school community donated more sandwich-making ingredients than could be used on that day, with bags of unopened supplies remaining and donated too. It is clear that our learners and families gave from the heart,” Megan said.

Megan expressed her gratitude to the learners, families, and staff members who supported the drive and made the day a success and shared how proud she is of them.

“You showed what it means to be global change-makers. You went above and beyond, and you made a difference.”
