Brilliant Welties minds shine bright at district level
Two Grade 5 learners win big in Natural Sciences and Maths.
Two Weltevreden Park Primary Grade Five learners shone brightly during recent district competitions, displaying incredible academic prowess.
Lily Echstein won the Natural Sciences and Technology Olympiad, and Naomi Alves won the Mathematics Olympiad.
On August 5, Naomi won first place in the Grade Five District Level Mathematics Olympiad. On August 27, she will compete in the Provincial Olympiad at Constantia Kloof Primary School. On August 14, Lily won first place in the Natural Sciences and Technology Olympiad at the district level and will compete in the Provincial Olympiad on August 23, also at Constantia Kloof.
Making their school proud, their exceptional accomplishments have raised the bar for future learners. These two achievers inspire their peers and serve as a memorial to the value of hard work and dedication because of their creative thinking, problem-solving abilities, and enthusiasm for learning.
A teacher at the school said she helped Lily prepare by giving her revision and practice tests.
“We focused on the prescribed topics and have encouraged her to apply these concepts when answering questions. This approach built her confidence and helped her with critical thinking under pressure,” said Muriel Leon.

Muriel mentioned the resources she used to support her teaching and how she integrates them into her lessons.
“We used textbooks, past papers, visual aids and digital resources such as videos. These were carefully integrated in lessons through demonstrations and practical activities to ensure learners connect theory work with everyday experiences,” she said.
She advised other teachers who want to inspire their learners to excel in Natural Sciences and Technology.
“Ensure that your science class is fun, relevant and has practical use in their lives. Use experiments and real-life examples to get them interested and learn to love science.”
She explained her plans for her learners’ future participation in similar competitions and how she will continue to support their growth.
“I encourage learners to participate in future competitions and provide ongoing enrichment during their lessons. They must continue to build on the confidence and conduct research to unlock their potential for their future,” she said.
