Students prove skills in business competition

Even though there was only one winner, all participants had something to learn from each other on the day.

A group of students from the IIE MSA School of Management proved their business skills by winning the 2025 Business Simulation Competition on August 20.

The team, African Solutions, won the competition by achieving good results, and their ability to make smart decisions under pressure left an impression on the judges.

The competition was part of a computer-assisted business simulation that is designed to give students a taste of what challenges businesses face in the real world. The students posed as accountants, CEOs, marketing managers, and entrepreneurs during the competition. Each team had to run a virtual company, and the profitability they achieved measured their success. The team that had the highest profitability walked away with the winners’ title.

African Solutions was made up of four members: Lufuno Matshaba, Nothile Mabaso, Kutlwano Seloane, and Mannini Boitumelo Phetlhu.

“The simulation was challenging and fun. I was the sales and marketing person for our team. For someone who wants to open their own business one day, the simulation taught me, among other things, that I need to be involved in every part of the business,” Lufuno explained.

The competition gave students more than just a competitive thrill. It gave them an opportunity to work on their leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. These skills are regarded as important for entrepreneurs to possess in the business world.
