Die Ruiter chess team makes all the right moves

Laerskool Die Ruiter's chess team performs exceptionally well at the Gauteng Chess Tournament.

Laerskool Die Ruiter’s chess team continues to grow from strength to strength, as reflected in their latest results.

Six talented U13 girls represented Gauteng and D12 at the Gauteng Top Schools team chess tournament, held at the John Barrable Hall in Benoni.

The event featured 26 schools competing in the U13 girls’ category, with Team Ruiter proudly securing 17th place – a testament to their rising skill and dedication.

This success follows their outstanding victory in the D12 chess tournament at The King’s School West Rand, where they claimed gold medals and first place.

The stellar performances of Rolivhuwa Mhlongo, Caitlin Eland, Rethabile Mosenohi, Yashmira Budhai, Trishana Hoffman, and Maeleigh Bush have firmly put Die Ruiter on the chess map.

Rethabile was the team’s standout player, winning all her matches. She now ranks ninth out of 142 U13 girls who participated.

Intermediate and senior coach Suzanne Swanepoel expressed her pride, saying, “It is the first time that one of our Ruiter learners has ended in ninth position. We are very proud of her.”

She added that the team exceeded expectations and performed far better than anticipated.

The girls have since been awarded new D12 sports colours for chess, making them the only recipients of such honours in the area.
