Hands-on business experience for learners at Gr 7 market day

The event is hosted annually as part of the Economics and Management Sciences (EMS) subject.

The school grounds at The King’s School West Rand were a hive of activity on Saturday, September 6, as learners prepared for their Grade Seven Market Day.

The day began with stalls being set up, which offered everything from homemade treats, ice cream, Kotas and cold drinks to fun games and handmade crafts.

The event is hosted annually as part of the Economics and Management Sciences (EMS) subject. Parents, teachers, and fellow learners flocked to the event, eager to support the Grade Sevens as they tested their business ideas in a real-world setting.

“Entrepreneurship Day is a great experience for the learners, as they get to serve a wider variety of people to serve and not just the kids from school. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn how to deal with people, how to serve people, how to handle money, and how to create a business,” said EMS teacher and event organiser, Stacey Lombard.

In preparation for the event, the learners worked in teams to come up with ideas, product pricing, and develop marketing strategies in the weeks leading up to the day. The teachers provided guidance throughout the process but allowed learners to take full ownership of their stalls, from concept to execution.

Long queues formed at the different stalls that quickly became the crowd’s favourites. The event also featured a boxing ring, a water slide, and a hanging challenge, which was the children’s favourite. Beyond the fun, the event gave learners valuable insights into business and being an entrepreneur.

The turnout of the day was described as one of the best in recent years. With this year being the first time that Stacy had the responsibility of organising the event, she expressed pride in the learners’ efforts, noting the skills developed during this day. The day served as a perfect family outing, with everyone finding something to enjoy on the school grounds.
