Young maths whiz soars to new heights
Oratile Mogatusi from Laerskool Culembeeck makes it to the final round of the South African mathematics challenge olympiad.
For Oratile Mogatusi, mathematics is a like a walk in a park.
The grade seven learner at Laerskool Culembeeck Primary has been a top achiever since grade one, and her latest accomplishment is a testament to her exceptional talent.
Oratile participated in the South African Mathematics Challenge Olympiad, making it to the final round along with 99 other top young mathematicians nationally.
The test, which took place on Thursday, September 11 at The Ridge School in Westcliff, Johannesburg, focused on algebra, advanced problem-solving, and internationally benchmarked content.
Oratile’s achievement is all the more impressive considering she has been excelling in mathematics competitions since last year, when she made it to the final round as a grade six learner and was invited to attend the Gauteng Provincial awards.
“I feel privileged to have this talent, and I appreciate the support I’ve been receiving,” Oratile said, beaming with pride. “I’d encourage other learners to be determined, work hard, and use the right resources.”
Tshepo Mogopudi, the co-ordinator of the programme and maths teacher at the school, introduced the Olympiad programme in 2020 and has seen increased participation and progress among learners. His advice to aspiring mathematicians is to set high standards, match them with behaviour and attitude, and emphasise repetition.
With Oratile currently awaiting the results to see if she’s made it to the Top 10, it’s clear that this young mathematician is on a roll.
