Lantern School’s cricket team has had an amazing season, marked by remarkable achievements and recognition at the national level.
Coach of the senior team, Jaco Mitton, alongside cricket player, Zameer Suleman, were recently awarded their South African LSEN Colours for Cricket, an achievement that signifies their hard work and dedication.
The award ceremony took place earlier in October, in Mpumalanga.
Jaco’s contributions were further recognised with his selection as team manager and treasurer for the national team, which will compete against other provinces in a tournament scheduled for December in Vanderbijlpark.
Additionally, Jaco played a key role as a member of the selection panel tasked with choosing the national team, and was also honoured for his 10 years of dedication to the sport of cricket.
Zameer, a Grade Nine learner, has been making waves in the cricket world, achieving milestones and setting his sights on even greater heights.
Having started his cricket journey in primary school, Zameer earned a spot on the Lions Extra Ordinary team for the second consecutive year, with notable recognition as the fourth best wicket-taker in the tournament.
His track record includes being part of the Lantern’s team that secured a hat-trick of league wins, as well as representing his school in the Sunday league, which ultimately led to his selection into mainstream cricket.
Zameer’s leadership skills have also been acknowledged, with him captaining the Lions Team Academy and being part of the Central Hub SA 20 team.
“Zameer is a hard worker and sets achievable goals for himself,” said Jaco, beaming with pride. “We are incredibly proud of him and the progress he’s made.”
Adding to the success, Westho-Otsile Hanyana was also shortlisted for the national team and was crowned the second most wicket-taker and the second best bowler in the tournament. Waylin Fortuin’s contributions further bolstered the team’s performance, cementing their position as a force to be reckoned with.
