Weltevreden Park Primary School rugby teams bows down for Randpark side in Golden Lions final.

Weltevreden Park Primary School (Welties) fell just short in a thrilling Golden Lions Primary Schools Rugby Tournament final held at Hoërskool Florida on Friday, June 19.

In a closely contested championship match, both teams displayed exceptional skill, determination and sportsmanship as they battled for the winning title. The result remained in the balance throughout, with neither side willing to give an inch. Welties lost 22–19 to Randpark Primary School.

“It was tough, but I’m proud the boys managed to get to the final after many attempts in previous competitions,” said Welties coach Jacob Boikanyo.

Welties delivered a spirited performance and fought until the final whistle, matching Randpark for much of the encounter. Forward Ronewa Munjedzi scored a try in the dying minutes, but despite their efforts, Randpark held on for a narrow 22–19 victory to claim the title.

The match was a fitting conclusion to an exciting tournament, with spectators treated to high-quality rugby and moments of brilliance from both sides. Welties earned their place in the final through hard work, teamwork and consistent performances throughout the competition.

“Although disappointed to miss out on the title by just three points, the boys are proud of their achievement in reaching the final and competing so strongly against one of the tournament’s top teams,” Boikanyo added.

Boikanyo praised the team’s commitment and resilience, noting that the experience gained from playing in a high-pressure final will benefit the young players in future competitions.

Despite the defeat, Welties left Hoërskool Florida with their heads held high after an outstanding tournament campaign that showcased the school’s rugby talent and fighting spirit.
