Pinnacle College learner excels in abacus and mental arithmetic competitions

Khumo Letlotlo Mashishi impressed judges with rapid mental arithmetic calculations on a flipchart in under 60 seconds.

Pinnacle College Ridge View learner Khumo Letlotlo Mashishi has secured top honours in abacus and mental arithmetic competitions, earning a place at the 2027 national championships.

Khumo received the Top Achiever Trophy at the National Championships at the 10th Kyu level and the Champions Trophy at the Annual Regional Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship at the 9th Kyu level.

The competitions were held on October 10 at Hoërskool Florida, where Khumo demonstrated his speed, accuracy and concentration while competing against other young mathematicians.

His latest achievements follow another impressive performance earlier this year at the national championships, where he completed mental arithmetic calculations on a flipchart in under a minute.

The results have earned Khumo a place at the 2027 AMSASA National Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship, scheduled to take place in KZN.

Abacus and mental arithmetic activities challenge learners to develop their numerical skills, concentration and ability to solve calculations quickly, often without relying on written methods or calculators.

Pinnacle College congratulated Khumo on his achievements, celebrating his performance in both the national and regional competitions.

His qualification for the 2027 national championship marks another opportunity for him to demonstrate his abilities among some of the country’s talented young mental arithmetic participants.
