Esmero Cycling Club reflects on 2019
Safety and family are the principles at the heart of the club
A family-orientated, safety-focused cycling club is progressively positioning itself as the pride of Roodepoort. Esmero Cycle Club recently reflected on a successful 2019 and shared their ambitions for 2020.
“It was a year of growth for the club,” said chairperson Imran Abbas, noting the club’s 25 per cent increase in membership. He also spoke of the improved personal performances of the riders, most notably in the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg where some riders improved their times by over an hour. This continued improvement maintains the club’s respected status within the cycling community.
A standout highlight from 2019 was the club’s 10th annual Tour to Durban. The tour always has a charitable purpose and it was the second year they teamed up with Lil Choices, the sanctuary for women looking for an alternative to abortion or wanting to escape abuse. “We support Lil Choices because it is a great cause. We are hoping to build a strong relationship with them,” affirmed Imran.
He is also firmly committed to upholding the highest levels of safety and cycling etiquette. “We promote riding safely – single-file riding and double on roads with yellow lanes, and to always respect fellow road users,” he added. Esmero also wishes to promote the family aspect of the club. “We encourage all the spouses to get involved, even if it’s parkruns and coffee runs,” he chuckled.
Maintaining the safe, family ethos and encouraging healthy competition will be the road map to this club’s sustained success.
