Knockout debut for local boxer

Up-and-coming boxing sensation Uzziah Chazonga competed in the Randgate Boxing Tournament, held on February 22. He was declared the winner of his bout with a technical knockout (TKO) in the third round.

Uzziah, who is a proud member of Savage Boxing Academy, dominated his first amateur fight for the welterweight category. According to head trainer Jesse Smith, Uzziah only began boxing in January 2023, and this was the beginning of his wonderful journey in the boxing ring.

“When Uzziah first joined, I was highly impressed with how quickly he adapted and saw how much talent and potential he has. The only thing was teaching the basics and allowing him to develop as he goes.

“He is always in the gym, which is the reason why he developed so easily. He is creating a name for himself, and we always get so excited when he competes because he always surprises us,” Jesse said.

During the first and second rounds, Uzziah carefully measured his opponent, observing his strengths and weaknesses, and the way he threw his punches and movements, which allowed him to secure an opportunity to knock out his opponent.

“It feels great to have won, although I knew that this title would be mine. I still feel like there is always room for improvement going forward. I would like to work on my angles, meaning I need to move out of the centre line occasionally as well as increase the power and volume in each punch,” Uzziah said.

He will be competing at the Bert Collins Boxing Tournament in Springs today, March 8.
