West Rand running clubs unite for thrilling 5km time trails

Roodepoort Athletics Club hosted a time trial challenge featuring running clubs from the West Rand.

Roodepoort Athletics Club played host to a thrilling 5km inter-club time trial challenge on Wednesday, March 4, bringing together running clubs from across the West Rand.

The day saw 80 runners and walkers from Roodepoort, Florida, Panorama, Krugersdorp and Khosa come together for a night of camaraderie, fitness, and friendly competition.

According to Conrad de Buys, the club’s chairperson, the time trial challenge was a longstanding tradition among West Rand running clubs, with each club hosting a challenge once a month. After a gap, the event was revived in 2025, and this year they’re keeping the momentum going.

“We are hoping to carry this with each club hosting every second month. It’s more than just a time trial, it’s about building camaraderie, team building opportunity, promoting fitness and having a blast with fellow runners,” said Conrad.

The night was filled with excitement, prego rolls on sale, and prizes up for grabs. Participants competed for the fastest man and woman titles from each club, as well as the overall winner.
