From foot surgery to 400 parkruns: Peter Leopeng keeps moving

Overcoming years of foot surgery and setbacks, a dedicated local runner shows that consistency, health, and community connection are the true rewards of reaching 400 parkruns.

When Peter Leopeng crossed the finish line of his 400th parkrun, the milestone represented far more than just another 5km run.

The 58-year-old began participating in parkruns around 2016, but his journey was interrupted for about two years after undergoing surgery to remove bunions from both feet.

Even after returning to running, Leopeng faced another setback. About four years after his initial operations, he had to return to hospital to have a surgical pin removed from his right foot due to ongoing discomfort.

These challenges did not stop him from returning to the parkrun community.

“Staying healthy and active is my primary motivation for participating in parkruns,” he said.

Rebuilding fitness and forming connections

Over the years, the weekly runs have also become a key social outlet, allowing him to meet new people and build lasting friendships while pursuing his fitness goals.

“These events are also an opportunity to meet and befriend incredible people,” he said.

Leopeng admits he also enjoys the competitive side of the events and strives to finish first in his age category. Now celebrating 400 parkruns, he hopes his journey encourages fellow runners to stay consistent and work toward their own milestones.

“My message to my fellow parkrunners is: Keep running and achieving those milestones. It is fun and only 5km,” he said.
