Welties' rugby kick off on high pace
Welties made their mark in the Golden Lions First League as they claimed two wins and a draw in their first three league encounters.
Weltevreden Park Primary School (Welties) claimed an 18–12 victory against Yeoville Primary School in the Golden Lions First League encounter, despite having all pre-season warm-up matches cancelled due to heavy rains.
According to Welties’ head of rugby Jaco Engelbrecht, they were put under early pressure as Yeoville crossed the line first, although they failed to score. Welties responded with intent, gradually taking control of the match and dominating the scrums throughout. Landile Moyake opened their goal with a penalty before Izu Ogbu powered over for the team’s first try, giving Welties a 10–5 lead at halftime.

The second half saw Welties forward Joshua Okeke produce a moment of brilliance, sprinting 80m for a superb try. Moyake added another penalty to extend the lead, and despite a late Yeoville try, Welties held firm to secure a well-earned victory.
“Captain Dylan Leenderts led from the front with a strong all-round performance, while Kian Kruger delivered a standout man-of-the-match display, dominating the breakdown with crucial turnovers,” he added.

Welties has shown great resilience, winning two of their opening three matches against Yeoville and Laerskool Dr Havinga, while securing a draw against Boskop Primary School.
