IPID arrests Honeydew police sergeant for alleged sexual abuse
The 49-year-old officer is accused of raping and sexually grooming a female relative under his care between 2022 and October 2024.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has arrested a 49-year-old police sergeant stationed at Honeydew Police Station in connection with the alleged rape and sexual grooming of a female relative.
The officer was arrested on Friday, October 23, and faces charges of rape and sexual grooming, according to an IPID media statement. The complainant, now 20, was 14 years old when the alleged abuse began.
She had been placed under the care of her aunt, who was married to the suspect, after losing both parents. IPID alleges that the abuse occurred between 2022 and October 2024. The incidents reportedly began while the complainant’s aunt was hospitalised, during which time the suspect allegedly forced himself on the teenager in her bedroom.
The suspect is also accused of intimidating and threatening the victim to prevent her from reporting the abuse, as well as paying her money to secure her silence.
The sergeant was detained at the Moroka holding cells and was scheduled to make his first appearance in the Protea Magistrate’s Court today, October 26. The arrest comes amid an increase in reported rape cases involving police officers.
According to IPID, 116 rape cases allegedly committed by police officers were registered during the 2025/ 26 financial year, up from 95 in the previous financial year.
Gauteng recorded the second-highest tally with 21 cases, behind the Eastern Cape. The figures represent a national increase of 21 cases, underscoring ongoing concern over sexual violence within the ranks of the police service.
