Word of the day

The word of the day for 12 December is: Reality.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘reality’ as the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.

Philip K Dick referred to reality as that which doesn’t go away when you stop believing in it. It is the part of life that we cannot avoid; it is inevitable. The best way to deal with reality, which can often be harsh, is to embrace it.

If we look at a problem and see just an unsolvable problem, we will get nowhere; but if we look at a seemingly unsolvable problem and see an opportunity, then there is a chance to make a change. At one point the most useful inventions of today were just ideas, but people made them a reality. Nikos Kazantzakis said, “Since we cannot change reality, let us change the eyes which see reality”.

Albert Einstein said that reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. People are often told that they cannot do something because ‘that is just the reality of the situation’. If you put enough hard work and research into an idea or a goal, you can achieve it. You can make your dreams a reality if you try hard enough and are honest with yourself about what you need to achieve them. Douglas H Everett said, “There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality, and then there are those who turn one into the other”.
