WATCH: Juvenile healthy at almost five weeks
According to BEPR, should all go well over the next three months, the juvenile will possibly fledge in the first week of September if it is a male, or a little later if it is a female.
As a result of the national lockdown, Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) unfortunately cannot monitor the eagles for specific information, but can confirm that the chick is doing well. The adults are bringing in prey to the nest and are feeding the chick.
Earlier this year BEPR confirmed the good news from the eagle nest in Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden (WSBG) that an egg has hatched.The hatching was expected to occur in the first few days of June as the egg was reported to have been laid on either 18 or 19 April.
“The chick is almost five weeks old now and as soon as the WSBG opens to the public we will able to get more pictures of the juvenile. Everything seems to be okay with the eagles,” said BEPR chairperson, Gerald Draper.

Although lockdown regulations curtailing movement are frustrating, the volunteers on the project are happy with the well-being of the eagles, and are looking forward to resuming their monitoring duties as soon as possible.
