Spandex-clad caterpillars are receiving expert guidance as they twist and bend through their metamorphosis into beautiful butterflies.

The Acrobatics Federation of South Africa (AFSA) held their Acrobatic Sport Central Gauteng national qualifiers, 1 November. Five clubs from the region sent their finest examples of poise and grace in a showdown for provincial colours and a shot at the national championships. Dancers from J & C Dance Creations lit up the stage in a powerful display of elegance and sophistication.

Categories ranged from junior ‘acrotots’ to the Elite Advanced level, and the young ladies from J & C dazzled the judges across the board. Standout performers were winners Jordan Mortimer who shone in the Elite Advanced level with a score of 9.78, and sisters Liya and Amani Adam who scored 9.71 and 9.68 in levels 10 and 9, respectively. Courtney Thomas from Monument Primary earned her first place finish with a 9.43 score in level 6.

“Acrosport is a very technical and precise form of acrobatics. There is an artistic score but is mostly judged on the difficulty of the trick elements and technique,” said head coach and studio founder, Jackie McGinn. Weltevreden Park Primary School leaner, Isabella Jansen van Vuuren, was also among the athletic contortionists pushing the limits of perfection with her score of 9.58, sweeping the Under 13 level 8 division.

The girls have now earned the right to challenge at the national championships to be held in Pretoria at the end of November.
