Electric fence foils suspects’ escape from JMPD officers in Florida
Suspects face additional charges after attempting to flee from officers and scaling a live electric fence during a routine patrol stop.
Officers from JMPD’s K9 Unit arrested two suspects along Ontdekkers Road in Florida on Wednesday, September 2, for possession of suspected stolen property and immigration violations.
During routine patrols and random stop-and-search operations along Ontdekkers Road, officers intercepted a suspicious blue Volkswagen Polo.
“Upon requesting and receiving permission to search the vehicle, officers inspected the boot and discovered three green Centurion gate motors fitted with complete anti-theft brackets and locks,” said JMPD’s spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla.
The occupants could not produce keys for the locks or provide a reasonable explanation for having the equipment, valued at an estimated R20 000.
During questioning, one suspect tried to flee on foot. Officers gave chase, leading to the suspect jumping over a boundary wall equipped with a live electric fence, where he sustained an electric shock. With the assistance of the property’s private security, officers secured and detained the suspect.
Neither suspect could produce valid identification.
“They were formally arrested and processed at the Florida Police Station on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and illegal immigration.”
Fihla said JMPD remains committed to ensuring visible policing, disrupting infrastructure theft, and maintaining law and order across the city.
