WRU hosts a successful pigeon show and auction
The large number of familiar breeders and some big names in the sport of roller pigeons contributed to the success of the event.

On Saturday, September 17 the West Rand Roller Union (WRU) hosted their Annual Birmingham Roller Pigeon Show at the Florida Park Tennis Club.
The show is hosted every year to raise funds for the WRU while giving everybody the opportunity to put their pigeons on show and to win great prizes.
The show was open to the public and gave the community an opportunity to join a club or union or to get more information about roller pigeons if they are interested in the hobby/ sport.
According to show coordinator Arno Bodenstein, they invited other union members as well and put the best-quality pigeons on auction to give people a fair chance to get hold of some of the best pigeons.
The organisers of the show are committee members of the WRU who received a lot of assistance from all the union members to put up the best possible show on the day.
“This year we hosted an open show for everyone to participate in. The union selected the experienced Hennie Cloete to judge and score the pigeons in the four categories being Young Cock, Young Hen, Old Cock and Old Hen,” explained Bodenstein.
The large number of familiar breeders and some big names in the sport of roller pigeons contributed to the success of the event.
The WRU was re-established in recent years from humble beginnings and a handful of loyal WRU Birmingham Roller Fanciers.
Bodenstein told the Record that to re-establish the WRU was a bold and a brave task but the challenge was taken on with open arms.
“The initial members of the new WRU were made up of some of the greatest Birmingham Rollers of modern times in the world, including one of the greatest ambassadors of the hobby, Johnny Conradie who is not only a respected South African household name, but also internationally,” explained Bodenstein.
Members of the community interested in joining the WRU are encouraged to contact WRU chairperson Ewald Botha who will have all the necessary information and advice on 083 459 0250.
WRU will host many events in the future, namely the Mini-Fly Cup for the union members and possibly an Inter-Fly Competition between WRU and other unions.
“If all goes according to plan there could be a World Cup Fly as well, after many events had to be cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic.”
