ORT SA gets pupils ready for life

HOUGHTON – THE launch of Houghton-based, ORT SA’s Ready for Life programme at Pace College in Soweto, was attended by 200 pupils and over 200 parents.

Anastasia Peters-Francis, regional consultant: community investment at Absa, handed over a cheque for R 1.5 million to ORT SA for the project.

“Participants from Pace, Naledi and Kwadeda secondary schools will be taught how to create start-ups and will be exposed to leaders of industry for advice and encouragement,” she said.

ORT SA’s Youth, enterprise and skills manager, Peta Broomberg said, “The training is intended to develop and encourage a new way of thinking amongst interested youth, so that they become self-sustainable and are able to contribute and grow the communities they live in. Together with the project sponsor, Absa, we are going to make an enormous impact.”

“We want to inspire and empower young people to unleash their entrepreneurial potential and develop these skills at an early age,” added Peters-Francis.

The principals of all three schools were enthusiastic about the programme.

The Ready for Life programme is accepting 300 Grade 9 pupils for this two-year, extra-curricular course. It is a credit-based certificate from the National Certificate: New Venture Creation (SMME) NQF level 2 qualification ID 49648.
