A game of chess while cheering on the Boks
PARKTOWN NORTH – Participants from a children's home enjoyed learning about chess while cheering on the Springboks.
While waiting for the much-anticipated final of the Rugby World Cup on 2 November, children of Abraham Kriel Satellite House indulged in a game of chess at the founder of Chess Heroes Academy Corno Klaver’s house in Parktown North.
According to Abraham Kriel Satellite house mother and caregiver, Amanda Viljoen, they were invited by Klaver for a day of fun. “Corno is sponsoring this event today and the coaches will teach my children to play chess. We saw it as a great opportunity for the children to learn chess one on one with the coaches,” Viljoen said.

She added that together with the house father Dennis Viljoen, they looked after 10 children and they took part in various activities.
“Chess is a very cheap game and it can uplift children. It is a very social game and enables them to get to know each other.”

Klaver said he had been intrigued after seeing a ‘chess cake’ (a cake resembling a chess-board) on their group and thought it would be great to invite them over to participate and be motivated. “It is also an opportunity to socialise and make friends and they were divided into small groups so as to enhance intimacy. I will give them chess boxes and pieces for Christmas,” Klaver said.

He added that if they enjoyed the game, they could do it again the following year and for the rest of the day they would watch rugby as well as enjoy a braai.
