The Park by Jono Wood
“The Park” offers a peephole into the underbelly of Johannesburg’s inner city. Hillbrow has long been maligned as a place for the desperate and drug addled, largely overlooked by the city’s middle class. The Park presents a sober look at the individuals who are living the story of this notorious suburb. Poverty and deprivation exhibited alongside grit and determination. A view of society’s forgotten, searching for a voice.
Whilst the exhibition is comprised of Wood’s photography, the project itself takes the shape of a larger anthropological study – facilitated by Nickolaus Bauer who gives regular guided walks through Hillbrow – and as such all images were shot on black and white film on location against a white background.
