Do your part on Mandela Day
If you're unsure how to spend 67 minutes making a difference to the lives of others this Mandela Day, some charities may have the answer.

Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation, Cotlands and Jerseys4Jozi have planned programmes and events on 18 July, the day that celebrates Madiba’s contribution to human rights.
Choc’s Sophie Ndhlovu said the foundation encouraged people to sell Choc items and debit order agreements at work for 67 minutes, as well as sourcing items to fulfil the charity’s wish-list.
The foundation also teamed up with Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital to create an opportunity for groups at the hospital.
“Groups can take part in art or baking activities with children in hospital, as well as face painting, spoiling the medical staff, providing soup for waiting room patients, giving small gifts to the children, bringing old magazines or books to the waiting room, reading to the children, or washing beds in the wards,” she said.
Groups can also cook meals for caregivers and parents, throw a party for the children, take part in a 10-minute show, or wash the cars at the Choc House in Saxonwold.
Cotlands’ Lois Moodley said that the charity was looking for a donation of 67 toys for its early learning play sessions, and needed assistance in revamping some of its toy libraries and offices.
“You can spend 67 minutes making toys out of recycled materials for our toy libraries and early learning play groups,” she said.
The charity also asked for donations of R67 to help educate South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens.
“That amount provides a child with access to two early learning sessions, which includes a meal and the services of a nurse and social worker,” said Moodley.
Jerseys4Jozi plans to distribute 150 jerseys to unemployed men and women, and will host a braai for them, which will take place at the Mondeor Recreation Centre.
