St John’s celebrates Mandela Day

Pupils from St John's Bridge Nursery School, as well as the pre-preparatory and preparatory schools, all went out to celebrate Mandela Day.

Pupils from several different grades were able to spend 67 minutes making a difference in the lives of others at different events.

The nursery school pupils enjoyed a teddy bear’s picnic in the school gardens.

According to the school’s Toni Williams, all the teddy bears brought donations to the picnic, which were given to Siyakhuliswa Educare and Pre-school, and to Ekukhanyeni Creche.

“Our pre-preparatory and nursery school pupils started the day with a combined assembly where they enjoyed a short presentation about Mandela before singing a happy birthday song,” she said.

The Grade 2 pupils said prayers and closed the assembly with the national anthem. The pre-preparatory pupils brought an extra packed lunch with messages of goodwill, which will be distributed to children’s places of safety in Hillbrow and Yeoville. The pupils also packed sweets into packets that will be decorated before being distributed to underprivileged children.

“The preparatory school pupils were requested to do 67 minutes of service over the weekend for the benefit of others. Each pupil will perform tasks of goodwill within their family or community. Pupils will also collect donations which will be given to the Jacoba Soccer Club to purchase gloves for one of their players, who was born without legs and uses his hands to walk,” said Williams.

The pupils will also collect recyclable materials to make eco-bricks for the construction of an education facility in Port Elizabeth.
