Fundraising for the love of music

CRAIGPARK – A parish fundraising event surpassed expectations, thanks to the generosity of the faith-based community, and the singing talents of tenor Luigi Bianco and his singing group.

The Italian-themed evening was held to raise funds for the restoration of St Martin de Porres Catholic Church’s pipe organ.

Guests enjoyed a three-course meal, and were entertained with a musical programme that drew from the works of Verdi, Donizette, Puccini, Bizet and Pigarelli between courses.

Bianco said his group often performed at church events to help raise funds for various projects.

“We perform at special occasions like weddings, for which we charge a nominal fee. But when it comes to churches, we don’t charge. We do it for the love of singing,” he said.

Bianco is an accomplished tenor, and sang with companies like Capab, Pact, Napac, Sukovs in South Africa, and also performed in Namibia and Zimbabwe.

“I formed the group in 2005,” he said. “I teach the members, and provide them with the opportunity to sing on stage. I think I still sing well, so I join them on stage.”

Bianco described the event as ‘beautiful’. “I was very happy with it, and all the singers enjoyed themselves, ” he said.

“Also, we could see the audience appreciated it.”

Another highlight of the evening was the auctioning of a painting donated by watercolour artist Jeanne Shepherd.

Parish Pastoral Council chairperson Chris Elfick took on the role of auctioneer.

The painting was bought by Alfie Griffiths, who donated it to be re-auctioned. This time, Dick Nesbit and Luna Malan were the successful bidders.

Parish priest Father Shaun Mary von Lillienveld said he was overjoyed at the success of the evening.

“We raised funds toward the restoration of the organ, but it also gave parishioners the opportunity to get to know each other a little better,” he said.

“It was a wonderful evening, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves, from the audience to the singers.”
