16 Days of Activism launched at ConHill
The Commission for Gender Equality launched the 16 Days of Activism for violence against women and children at Constitutional Hill.
The campaign was launched under the theme ‘Kwanele: Communities united in preventing violence against women and children’.
Opening the launch, deputy chairperson of the commission Thoko Mpumlwana said the message behind Kwanele (a Zulu word meaning ‘enough’) is aimed at mobilising communities to stand up against abuse and rape because “enough is enough”.
Mpumlwana said seeing rape stories reported by the media should be enough to get anyone angry.
“We should get angry, and not sleep, until we can find a solution in ridding our communities and society of rape and the brutal killings of women, children, gays and lesbians,” said Mpumlwana.
She added, “During the next 16 days, we wish to highlight our anger toward the kind the violence experienced by our children and women.”
She emphasised the constant need to protect women and children and how people should stand up against abuse.
“Mothers can’t even let their children play outside with other children in their communities because they live in constant fear that something horrible will happen to them,” said Mpumlwana.
“We all need to contribute to make South Africa a safer place for everyone.”
