Orange Grove residents lose clean water in flooding excavation
Residents feel the effects of Johannesburg’s ageing infrastructure after flooding.
Questions about upkeep and maintenance of the city’s infrastructure have once again come to the fore after a flooding excavation on 12th Street in 9th Avenue in Orange Grove has been unattended for several months.
Ward 73 councillor, Eleanor Huggett, who was present at the site on June 3, said, “The massive excavation is a result of negligence and lack of resources. The excavation is certainly deep enough to cause danger and for children to drown in.”
Huggett added that the excavation has not only been reported but escalated for months with no response or repairs by Johannesburg Water.
The publication is yet to receive a response from Johannesburg Water to the questions asked regarding the flooding excavation.

The water utility recently completed a major water pipe replacement project in Blairgowrie, Randburg.
According to a Joburg Water media release: “This marked a significant milestone in the City of Johannesburg’s ongoing efforts to enhance water security, reduce leaks and water wastage, and provide a more sustainable water supply for residents.”
The project, which formed part of Johannesburg Water’s broader water infrastructure renewal programme, focused on replacing ageing and frequently failing asbestos cement pipelines with modern, high-quality, corrosion-resistant mPVC pipes.
These upgrades are designed to reduce water losses, ensure consistent pressure, and minimise disruptive bursts.
