Rosebank Fire Station robbed

ROSEBANK - Spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Services Synock Matobako said the Rosebank Fire Station had been temporarily closed after firemen were robbed of their cellphones, money and a walkie-talkie on Friday morning.

Matobako said the decision to close the centre was taken after the department saw a need for the traumatised firemen to undergo counselling. He didn’t give an indication as to when the centre would be opened again.

He said the incident was reported to the police who are investigating.

According to Matobako two armed men wearing balaclavas stormed into the centre and pointed firearms at the firemen before taking their belongings. He said, “They tried to snatch a laptop and an engagement ring from a female staff member, but when the woman resisted the men snatched one earring and sped off [in a car parked in Bath Avenue].”

Matobako acknowledged that the closure of the centre would be an inconvenience to the Rosebank community. He advised people to phone 10177 from their land lines and 112 from their cellphone in the event of emergency.

The police had confirmed the incident and the robbers were still at large.
