‘Yeoville is a joke’

This is according to the chairperson of the Yeoville Bellevue Ratepayers Association, Reverend Tsepo Matubatuba.
Matubatuba’s statement came after an extension was added to the building, Radoma Court on ERF 471, on the corner of Yeo and Cavendish streets.
Following the article, Preserve our heritage, North Eastern Tribune, week ending 23 May, Matubatuba said he was in support of the recent email sent to the executive mayor’s office by the chairperson of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, Flo Bird.
In her email Bird said, “I have written to you [Mayor Parks Tau] almost daily to advise you on the latest developments which are infuriating people all over Johannesburg. I am getting messages from architects and heritage members responding to tweets and Facebook posts. Yeoville is a mess, thanks to the failure of the city to uphold its authority.”
She added that the owner of the building in question was in defiance of a stop-order to build from the city council, and one from the provincial heritage resources authority of Gauteng.
“He [the owner of the building] has done this before in Yeoville, and other owners also act with impunity because the lily-livered city won’t take on the slumlords and uphold building regulations, health and safety requirements let alone the National Heritage Resources Act,” Bird continued. “Why do we have Metro police? What is their purpose? Are they not supposed to uphold the authority of the city?”
According to Matubatuba, the building was a heritage site of notable architectural standing within the city and his organisation had opposed the extensions, which he said were illegal. “We are calling on the development planning MMC and her officials to stop this carnage with immediate effect,” he said.
“The people tasked to fulfil this and related roles within the city have actually abdicated their responsibility to serve the residents of the city,” concluded Matubatuba.
