DA takes commanding lead in early Ward 90 vote count

Trailing parties fall well behind as unofficial tallies from four local voting stations put the incumbent firmly ahead.

Following yesterday’s voting in the 2026 Local Government Elections, early returns for Ward 90 indicate the Democratic Alliance (DA) holds a substantial lead across both the ward councillor and proportional representation ballots.

According to figures shared by Ward 90 councillor Renate van Onselen this morning, the DA received 8 685 votes, representing 79.25% of the 10 959 valid ward ballots counted.

ActionSA secured 595 votes, followed by 506 for the ANC and 252 for the EFF, with remaining parties collectively tallying 921 votes.

Clear margin across PR and ward ballots

The proportional representation ballot similarly favoured the DA, which took 8 508 votes (76.82%) of the 11 075 valid ballots counted. ActionSA received 705 votes, the ANC 534 and the EFF 334, while the remaining parties received a combined 994 votes.

Preliminary figures show the DA received the most votes at all four voting stations on both ballots: Craighall Primary, Dunkeld Bowls Club, George Lea Sports Club and Hyde Park High.

With 17 777 registered voters in Ward 90, the valid proportional representation ballots counted indicate a voter turnout of at least 62.3%.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) will confirm the final turnout figure once spoilt ballots are taken into account.

Van Onselen said the results indicated that the DA would retain Ward 90 and that she would continue serving residents, subject to official verification and confirmation by the IEC.

She thanked residents who participated in the election, as well as the DA volunteers and party agents involved in the voting and counting processes.
