Norwood police arrested a suspect for attempted murder following a shootout with a security guard.
According to police, an on-duty Cortac security guard was posted to patrol the Houghton area, and while patrolling with his crew they received a tip-off that there was a possible business robbery in Central Street.
Norwood police spokesperson Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said the crew drove to the address and found a maroon BMW with one occupant parked outside the address.
Tsoanyane said, “As they [approached] the car, the BMW drove off and an unknown man jumped over a fence from the address and tried to run away. The security guard tried to stop him but he didn’t stop.”
Tsoanyane added that when one of the security guards got closer to the suspect, the suspect started shooting at him. The security guard returned fire and shot the suspect who later collapsed. His firearm was recovered, she said.
The suspect was expected to appear in Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
