Water management on the rise

ROSEBANK – Water security remains one of the most tangible social, political, and economic challenges faced by communities across the globe, the South African Local Government Association (Salga) said.

Salga National Executive Committee member, councillor Pinky Moloi spoke with the media at the Hyatt Regency in Rosebank about Salga’s annual report on water services at municipalities. This is part of the Municipal Benchmarking Initiative (MBI).

“It is inconceivable that in the 21st century, with all the technological advances in the world, contaminated water can still be linked to a loss of life,” she said, adding that the vision to build a water-secure world was yet to be accomplished.

The purpose of the initiative is to support municipalities in improving the efficient service delivery in the area of water management. This is done through comparative performance benchmarking and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing.

The MBI is premised on six key pillars, with a focus on water conservation and demand management; human resources and skills development; service delivery and backlog eradication; operational management and maintenance; product quality; and financial management.

Moloi said the MBI signifies a step in the right direction in improving water services delivery in the country. “It is an innovative and inclusive approach to tackling service delivery issues,” she added.
