Man celebrates 90th birthday in Superman costume

For Elphin Lodge resident, Ken Gannaway, his recent 90th birthday celebration was one of the happiest moments of his life.

Gannaway and his wife Rene moved to the Rand Aid-run retirement village six years ago after leaving Parkmore, where they had lived for about 50 years.

Their family members travelled from England and Australia to join the birthday celebrations that kicked off with a three-night stay at a game lodge in the Waterberg.

A gathering for 30 family members and friends was also held at the village’s clubhouse.

Gannaway was dressed in a Superman-inspired outfit.

Gannaway told the North Eastern Tribune that he had once attended a retirement preparation course run by Hugh Goyns. He said, “… The man was a complete health fanatic and he had a philosophy that retirement was not a time to sit and vegetate, but, to get off one’s backside and continue to live an active and useful life.”

The couple has since remained members of the club and are the oldest active couple in the club.

In honouring his birthday, the club organised another celebration for Gannaway.

Gannaway added that himself and his wife have kept active for the past 30 years and have hiked in places including Greece and Crete, the country’s largest island. The couple has also cycled on the island of Aegina and done a five-day canoeing trip down the Orange River.

Gannaway has practised yoga for around 25 years and still attends classes.

The England-born father of three has lived in South Africa for over 60 years and has six grandchildren.

He said he was deeply grateful for having enjoyed a rich life and for being blessed with good health and the support of a happy, loving family. “… Plus the ability to look back over the past and look forward to the future, no matter how long or short that may be, with a glow of satisfaction,” said Gannaway.
