A tiny hobby that captures big imaginations
An elderly Sydenham couple is proof that it is possible for two people to enjoy the same hobby and share the passion for it.
Since June 2000, Ervine and Brenda Katzer have mastered the art of miniature making.
The couple gave North Eastern Tribune a tour of their home and showed off some of the pieces they made over the years.
Replica items made include an art studio, a museum, the Temple of Jerusalem as well as a doll house.
The couple is affiliated with the Johannesburg Society of Miniature Enthusiasts.
On 30 August, they will exhibit their work at the society’s 22nd Annual Festival of Miniatures, scheduled to take place at the Parkhurst Recreation Centre.
The event will take place over a two-day period starting from 9am.
An entrance fee of R10 is payable.
Although she is proud of all her pieces, Brenda said her favourite by far is the doll house she made years ago.
As to how long it takes them to complete a piece, Ervine said, “It depends from project to project. Some can take four months, others can take up to a year.”
He added in order to succeed at miniature making one needed patience and a great imagination. “There is a lot of work and research that goes into this, you need to also love what you are doing,” said Ervine.
He has also made a shul replica which captured the attention of many in the Jewish community.
The couple has a room in their home dedicated to their favourite pastime activity.
