40 years of musical inspiration
Author and piano teacher Valerie Kerr believes the future looks bright.

Kerr, affectionately known as Val, spoke to the North Eastern Tribune from her Rembrandt Park home where she teaches piano.
To date, Kerr has written five music books for children and has composed many pieces of music which are registered with the South African Music Rights Organisation. She also has qualifications in hypnotherapy, meditation, colour and sound therapy, as well as music teaching qualifications from Trinity College of London. Kerr said although she was no longer accepting children for piano lessons, she hoped to inspire and help them with her books, which are available online and on order. She said she wanted to help young children retain their ability to use their imagination.
“These books give awareness,” she said. “By the time the child [who has read them] goes to a music teacher, they have a background and knowledge of where certain keys are situated and how each note is played,” said Kerr.
On 2 November, Kerr will host a piano recital where all her students will come together. She said, “We will be taking a musical journey around the world through classical music.”
Kerr has taught piano, music theory, harmony and singing for 40 years.
She said she teaches piano to her adult students on a one-on-one basis and hosts music healing sessions every fourth Sunday of the month.
The mother of four has been married for 53 years and has seven grandchildren.
Kerr said she had an exciting venture in the pipeline which she will reveal in the coming months.
